Life of an Artist

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

<disclaimer> Warning, reading this entry may cause loss of attention, dyslexia, or other more serious syndromes commonly associated to rants by Kodie that have no moral, point, or concluding thought… in fact I’m not sure if this one even has a common theme.  You have been forewarned. </disclaimer>

Every man’s art

“A man can be an artist at anything. It just depends upon how good he is at it. Creasy’s art is death, and he’s about to paint his masterpiece, just stay out of his way.” I absolutely love that line…. It’s so true though isn’t it?  I could sit here and give you some word perfect definition of what an artist is, but what’s the point?  Who could really define an artist anyways?  If there ever was an artist I most certainly am one and most certainly could not define for you what one is.  Art is not solely based upon how good someone is at something, as Creasy’s friend put it in the movie Man on Fire (which by the way is an awesome movie).  No art goes much deeper than just some measurable value of how “good” someone is at something… of course that is a big factor, but art has a much deeper emotional, almost spiritual aspect to it.  Which is in part why it is so hard to define what an artist is.  There has to be an attitude about it as well.  Creasy most definitely was an artist… an artist of death at that too.  How would you like for that to be the way you are remembered?  That would be freaking awesome!  To be known as the guy who was so good at death, yes death that single handedly sent a shock wave through the community of criminals in Latin America.  When I die I don’t care how much money I’ve made throughout my life, or care what my accomplishments were… I just want the words on my gravestone “He made an impact” don’t even put my name just that line, but only if it is true.

A circle of job security

Most of you guys know that I’ve been working for  Viacom as of late… which at first I did something, and actually helped them to make a couple of websites not only more secure, but more fun for the participants.  In fact I deserved every penny that I earned if not more because they surely made it back in advertising cost.  However my job with them has simply become what my cousin described as a circle of job security.  My job any more is to give third party “expert” reports that give another guy a job to present these reports to a board of directors and eventually gives another guy a job to do programming on the websites… the programmers however are making sure to keep their jobs by purposely not taking all of my suggestions or ignoring them on later website projects so that I might review that website give the SAME kinds of report and begin the cycle all over again.  Things aren’t all bad with it since this circle has reached a major apex it looks like I’ll have some money to pursue some of my passions, which leads into my next section (since I do make more money than both my parents when I’m working full time).

Forging a passion

When I say that I’ve got a lot of money from this cycle of job security I really do mean it.  There is a lot on the list of what needs to be done with the money however… being that I might be moving out here shortly means we need monies for rent, food, etc.  There has been another option presented though, if my mom marries Scott which has been a serious discussion here lately then they’re looking at moving into Scott’s place and I’ll be taking over the house (including the house payment).  So I’ve got to keep a good reserve of cash for numerous reasons of those being that this cycle can’t last forever, someone is bound to either catch on, or the new sites will end eventually.  Although I need a cash backup there are a few things that are on the list of being purchased one major thing is some stainless steel rings for Xandra (yes Tiana Xandra will be finished but since I can no longer find the black I’m going to have to go with a purty stainless steel option instead, which isn’t too much of a heart wrench since the blackened mild steel is dirty, and it must be oiled to keep from rusting so wearing it is just bad.).  The other thing that crossed my mind with the expendable funds was to get a sword *insert ominous smile here* Now there’s a few things that go into me wanting a sword… first off it must be from a time period that I know a good deal about and has to be something that fits my fighting style.  For me the most obvious choice was a Katana they fast moving single/two handed slashing swords, which is a great fit for the way I like to fight with a sword.  The problem with Katana’s is that I don’t really want to cut into my cash reserve and spend over $800 on a sword… and in fact would like to spend less, but I know that with swords you don’t really get less than $800 and being an artist who does not compromise on the price of my jewelry I understand and would never be so rude as to ask them to go lower.  Mediocre Katana’s start at $1,200 and go up to $1,700 for one that you can actually go out and play with… which was another huge requirement for me, I need to be able to use whatever sword I get… I don’t do SLO’s (Sword Like Objects) a big reason why I don’t own any of the swords from the LOTR movies because they’re just not swords they’re 100% overpriced SLO’s and couldn’t be used for a sword if you wanted.  I then started looking for European swords, especially either Celtic, or Roman short swords (the Celts invented the sword style used by the Romans and the Romans improved upon it with brutal efficiency and made it the most feared weapon of it’s day).  In this search I found a company by the name of Generation 2 which is based in the Philippines and makes great functional swords of high quality steel.  They make swords in the sub $300 range that will hold up to a lot of punishment with a quality constructed hilt (often the hilt is the weakest point in any sword no matter how good it is made).  The problem with Gen2 is that they make UGLY swords.  No kidding, all of their swords come with a mirror finished blade, and often black VERY shinny accent pieces.  They’re also often times a little heavier than swords of the time period as well… which I’ve heard they’ve improved upon.  All of this kept bringing me back to a company that I’ve lusted for one of their swords for a long time Albion.  If you know anything about swords you know Albion, and in turn brings us back to art.  Albion has made sword making into an art, and they are unmatched in beauty, historical accuracy, and quality of construction.  There are two styles of sword that I would go with either a Roman short sword, or an Oakeshott XII I could go with an Oakeshott XV possibly… but XII is really where I like to stay because they still retain their slashing ability.  The further up the Oakeshott scale you go the closer to a rapier you get and to be honest yes, most the time when I go to kill you I’m going to stab you, but I want to be able to cut your heard off when the mood strikes… and lets be honest you’re not going to cut someones head off with a rapier, I mean you could if you sat and sawed on it for a while… but that’s getting into the realm of sadistic.  That’s why I like the Oakeshott XII it’s not like the Oakeshott X where it’s like the viking swords and really just a big metal club… type X’s are clumbsy and you really need to keep them in motion and just crush your enemy with the first couple of blows… which is fine for people like Chris who like to fight like that, but for me I want a nimble sword that I can also stab with.

After weeks of invested time into “where should I get a sword from” and “is it really worth it to pay double the money for an Albion when I could get a sturdy sword for less?” another solution came to mind.  One that is not new either and that is “Buildeth me an army worthy of Mordor.”  oh wait… NO!  that’s not the thought that came to mind… jeez, what’s wrong with you, get out of my head, you are hence forth banned from taking over my body to type your random movie quotes.  Begone demon!  The thought that actually crossed my mind was to build my own forge and make my own swords :-D  Problem here is that it’s a good 3 years down the road before I start pulling out quality stuff and probably 4 before I can really make swords… I can do blacksmithing here pretty easily, but need more equipment for full fledged swords.  What I was going to do was get a cast iron anvil from this tool company that I buy a lot of cheap crap from, build my own forge, and build a small concrete covered patio section in my back yard since I’ll be taking over responsibility of the house here pretty soon anyways.  Problem is that everyone I’ve talked to online or read articles about beginning blacksmithing says absolutely do not get a cast iron anvil… which is fine, a quality Peddinghaus (<– the best) anvil will only cost me $600 shipped.  Problem with that is after paying that then I don’t have the money to build a shelter area… which kind of ruins the whole forge idea… so unless the cycle of job security continues then I think I’m just going to get an Albion… which may make me sad in the long run that I can’t make my own… but if I got a Peddinghaus and had nowhere to work at then I’d be just as sad…

Moral

Moral of the story is “Don’t be like me. Don’t you be like me!” *shakes dog* for those of you who have seen As Good as it Gets and could relate to the movie as much as me :-P
Oh, and I really wanted to put a bit in at the top about how even in Creasy’s sin God still used him as an instrument of his wrath.  In the Bible God say’s “Judgment and vengeance is mine”   But sometimes God uses men to play out his vengeance.  Much like Samson who pulled down a temple to pagan gods onto himself destroying many evil people in the process Creasy pulled down a temple of corrupt money driven men onto himself destroying the hostage machine in Mexico City, and sent fear though all those in Latin America doing the same things.  Just like Samson it was Creasy’s sin that got him in the situation he was, but once there God used him as a mighty weapon to pour out judgment upon an evil peoples.

The Three Sided Coin

That’s what I wanted to title this one… the three sided coin.  Originally I was just going to get on here and review this wonderful movie Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School with my own opinions of how this movie was so amazingly intricate story of the “what ifs” in life.  I planned on going on and on about how one mans what if so easily can become anothers new beginning… when I finally realized that the movie wasn’t about the what ifs of life at all.

After talking to my mom I learned that the movie was actually about relationships, or at least from her perspective.  Scott on the other hand knew that the movie was about second chances… yet we were all wrong, the movie is not about the what ifs in life, nor is it about the relationships in life and how they all intermingle to work out God’s plan, nor was the movie even about second chances… no… the movie is about you, and me so delicately complex and beautifully displaying our own life stories reflected in the lives of others on screen.

This is why I spend my time going out of my way to find every Indie film of note to watch.  Because every once in a while you find a Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School that has you happily sighing in awe of the artistic viewpoint of the world around us.  Quite possibly my favorite Indie film of all time pushing past  Dear Frankie… which is also a great film but not as complex or intricate.  You only begin to see just how complex the movie is with the realization that Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School is actually the second part to the story… now the 2005 movie tells the story of both movies with flashbacks from a short movie made in 1990 of the same title.

Well worth your time to watch, and definitely worth going through whatever troubles to hunt this movie down!

Transformers

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Can we say ownzinated? Definitely was not expecting the movie to be as good as it was. You know I go to movies all the time where people are like “oh dude the CGI stuff is so amazing” so obviously I have to go see it because I’m one big nerd ya know? Then when I get to the movie I’m sitting there watching and all these “cool” CGI effects are going on and everything and this pestering voice in the back of my head keeps saying things like “particle system is lacking…” “oh, and they couldn’t program in world reflect?” “what is up with those vertex shaders?” “wow, horrible rag doll effects.” “uh… ever heard of anisotropic filtering?” “seen better in games…” So I end up really disappointed with most peoples idea of good CGI effects… which I wasn’t expecting much with Transformers anyways. I was going to relive some childhood years and do my quarterly hanging out with friends ya know? Get out of the basement for a little while… leave behind my gorgeous 22inch 2ms widescreen with 3000:1 dynamic contrast. Anyways, Transformers did an awesome job with the CGI I was very impressed (which is a pretty high complement coming from someone who stares at CGI all day long). The lighting and world reflect details are especially good and really show the attention to detail and time taken to make the movie. They blend the CGI in so well that there are only a few times during intense fight scenes that you would even question the CGI as real… but there is so much going on at the time that most people won’t even notice then.

I was pleasantly surprised with the story line of Transformers also. Could easily be put up there on the level of the Spiderman series as far as plot and script writing goes. Although the battle scenes are what makes the movie amazing there’s plenty of humor spread throughout to make the slower times pass with ease… also get your past some of the poor acting. Now don’t get me wrong I think Shia LaBeouf is a good guy, did rather well in holes too… unfortunately he’s not the greatest of actors. You kind of just get him in whatever he does. Which is fine I know it’s worked for a lot of “actors” before who have very unique personality’s like Shia. And in all fairness Mr. LaBeouf wasn’t too shabby for the movie, just a few things seemed forced, and since I can’t think of anyone else within our age range that could pull it off better we’ll leave it as is. Megan Fox’s role as Mikaela Banes could of been played by a hundred other girls who could of pulled the role off much better. The whole movie she’s trying to pull off this cute sweet and innocent girl who’s a total badass as well as the way the script is written mixes in a sex appeal to the equation. It’s really the cute, sweet, and innocent that throws the balance off though I think… Angelina Jolie pulls the whole car freak who’s drop dead gorgeous in gone in 60 seconds with no problem, much the same role as should of been played by Megan for Transformers… it just doesn’t come off that way in the movie. She comes off as ditzy and afraid of something. Somewhat I understand where her acting comes from since she’s supposed to be this whole popular girl thing and she does so very well… maybe it should be the writers that I complain about here instead since “the popular girl” would not be caught up in that situation. Mikaela reminds me a lot of my friend Liz who was one of the popular people but loved cars because her dad was always into them. Liz however would not be caught dead in the middle of a robot droid death match, and if by accident did end up in that situation definitely would not have stuck it out to the end like Mikaela did… which is probably why Megan’s role in the movie is so unbelievable since she has no real motive for staying around but does, which sounds great to the American who loves rogue vigilance, but just doesn’t happen in real life.

None the less, I still liked the movie a lot and would recommend everybody go see it!  They’re also working on a sequel… which I’m not quite sure if I’m stoked about or not.  I’ll go see it none-the-less but I hope they don’t botch the movie with sequels like has become the trend lately.

Mozart and the Whale

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

There are some times that you go to watch movies in order to escape reality, other times that the movies you go to watch only enhance reality.  This just so happened to be the latter.  I wasn’t really expecting anything when I went to watch the movie “Mozart and the Whale” but sure got a lot out of the movie.  It was just one of a few random movies my mom had rented and since I’ve been too sick to want to do anything but lay down and sleep watching movies has been good, and what I’ve been doing for the last couple of days.

I’ve always just considered myself Obsessive Compulsive because I know that I am… never been truly diagnosed but according to tests that I’ve found, and well my behavior it’s a pretty obvious thing for me.  It has never bothered me, and in fact makes me better at a lot of things that I do.  Watching Mozart and the Whale which is about a couple of people with Asperger’s syndrome (a kind of autism) I couldn’t help but sit laughing at myself.  The movie was a littler peculiar, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Probably a million times I’ve had different friends of mine tell me that they were going to clean my room when I was away, which I generally have no response for because what do you say to such treachery?   It’s kind of funny watching Mozart and the Whale one of the big scenes is when Isabelle cleans Donald’s apartment and he FREAKS!  It would be about the same for me… I might not live through the ordeal (coronary heart attack) or if I did you might not.  From watching the movie I kind of wonder if it could be Autism that plagues me instead of OCD… but then again I’m no expert and when you really look at things ADD, OCD, and Autism all are very near to one another in symptoms and not being any kind of expert really couldn’t tell you what the major differences are.  Funny thing is, one of the reasons I fell in love with Chainmaille so much is because of something that would seem very autistic.  I have a cousin who is Autistic his mom is a psychologist and was talking about how at her work they have a lead jacket for autistic people because they love the confinement… which is exactly why I love the way chainmaille feels… I like to describe it to people as being the opposite of claustrophobic, when I was in middle school I used to love going into storm drains and I would actually travel entire street blocks through the narrow concrete pipes that connected them… dark, stingy, and barely enough room for my body I loved being there in the quiet hole that was so far from where anyone would bother to find me.  Only problem is I’ve got all the bad things about Autism without any of the good side affects, usually autistic people are writers, mathematicians, composers, or in some other great artistic field of profession.  Oh well, for those of you who would like to see what would happen to Cody if you really did go through with your plans of secretly cleaning my room while I am away at some point in time watch the movie “Mozart and the Whale” and you’ll get a good idea of why I’ve never allowed anyone to come close to touching my room.

Amazing Grace

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I went with my Mommy and sister to see Amazing Grace on Sunday. I believe I was expecting something a little different heading to see the movie though. Often times I get caught in the “feeling” of things, and that is what was expected of the movie. When I think of the song “Amazing Grace” the only thing that comes to mind is the feeling that comes from singing the song. It’s just one of those songs that sends chills down my spine every time I hear it or sing it… obviously in order for a movie to do the same thing for the entirety would be something miraculous in itself since it takes a lot to send chills down my spine… I’m a pretty callous person and for something to be so profound as to provoke so much emotion inside of me is something else all together.

Needless to be stated at this point the movie was not about a song, or an emotion, but rather about a man with the courage to stand against unrelenting adversity. Just like all of us though, he got discouraged, ill, beaten down, and felt like quitting at times. A little encouragement from his friends, and loved ones kept him going. Every time he was beaten down he got back up again, that is where the difference lies. The world is not changed by perfect people, or even perfect intentions it is changed by those that get in the face of adversity and fight every day non-stop.

Some people have called my stubbornness foolish, but I tend to disagree (naturally). In my opinion anything worth fighting for is worth fighting for until the end. Unless you can prove me wrong, my word stands, and it will stand as long as I have breath to keep it alive.

Dear Frankie

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I somewhat doubt that many would even recognize the title Dear Frankie when speaking of movies, but it’s one that I’ve wanted to see for some time.  Unfortunately being a low budget movie it came and went from the theatres almost unnoticed.  Even though the movie won 7 awards, most of which were film festivals leaving the movie still unrecognizable to the general public.

In a world where even movies with a good message resort to extreme circumstances to portray how out of horrid can come good, as is the case with so many other movies out today.  Instead Dear Frankie takes the approach of showing the beautiful side of what good can come of life, and only skims the bad… since we can all fill in the gaps with our imaginations the need to show the horrid things in life is simply unnecessary, something that was a relief about this story.  I won’t go into the story or anything since I’m sure most haven’t seen it, but I do highly suggest it.  Dear Frankie ends hopeful and reassuring, but doesn’t complete the story, as it should be in my mind since no story is ever complete.

She’s the Man

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

So Brittney rented the movie “She’s the Man” with Amanda Bynes… not much to really say about the movie. It really wasn’t very believable, even though I could see Amanda as “one of the guys” she’s still too frufruey to be a soccer player. I mean seriously she can’t even run… she holds her arms in really tight like she’s afraid of being hit, and wiggles when she runs… she almost looks like she’s going to fall over. Not to mention they obviously weren’t identical twins, and people would of noticed a difference in bone structure… I dunno, funny concept and it was worth a couple of light hearted laughs… sort of… Typical lame teenage movie.

Now to cleanse my pallet with a little bit of culture… Finding Neverland should do the trick :-D

300

Sunday, March 11th, 2007

Well I did end up making it out to see 300 with Zack and Stephanie from work (not because they found my blog, but rather because I regurgitated my stalker skills from back in high school and found them.)  As was expected the movie did contain much blood, death, and carnage!  Woot!!  None the less several things about the movie bothered me in a historical respect.  Now I know that very little is actually known about the battle of Thermopylae but there are some very clear historical facts that were ignored.  Three specifically that stood out to me.

First off a little history and background of the Spartans:

The Spartans were warriors, as was depicted in the movie their profession was war, death, and destruction.  I don’t think it was clearly shown from the movie but the festival that they ignored to go to battle was the only time during the year that they were home.  The Spartans lived at war, away from home, and only returned once a year to mate.  Spartan women were used only to produce children, and wouldn’t of been listened to like Leonidas listened to his wife in the movie… yes, the Spartans did consider their women higher than other women the only ones worthy of carrying Spartan children, but they still weren’t respected as such portrayed in the movie.  Also, the Spartans were homosexual… which I found it very odd that Leonidas made fun of the Athenians for liking boys… The idea was that if you loved the man next to you, you were more likely to stand next to him and die if necessary.

Now for the battle itself:

When the Persians arrived they sent scouts to see what they were up against, one of Xerxes commanders observed Leonidas and his 300 men doing what was described as naked calisthenics.  Understanding the implications of said ritual he returned to Xerxes to report the news urging him to attack then.  Xerxes laughed at the commanders notion and said to let them have their rituals they would be dead by nightfall.  In allowing the ritual to continue he gave them a huge advantage.  One thing about the movie that was somewhat disturbing was that the Spartans fought half naked the whole time… Ok, nobody goes into battle naked, and the Spartans had amazing armour (much better than most anyone else of the time because they got the very best of the pick after winning battles and wars).  So in essence what the commander that reported to Xerxes was saying was “hey look, these guys don’t have their armour on, and they’re currently gettin’ each other from behind, so lets attack while we have a chance.”

Xerxes:

The last thing, may seem minor, but actually bothered me quite a bit.  By this point in time of history Xerxes would of been married to Esther.  The whole traveling harem he had with him… yeah, not gonna happen.  When he married Esther his harem was left as a place for female slaves to be separate from the guys, and nothing more.  Not to mention NOBODY brought their harem with them to battle…. I mean besides just the fact that it’s a ridiculous notion no great warrior and king such as Xerxes would want to distract his troops with them.

That’s about all that really bothered me… There’s not really much to base 300 off of so just make sure that there is lots of blood, lots of death, and a good amount of carnage you should be good.  Some of the artistic license that was taken with the movie, such as exaggerating the rhino’s and the elephants seemed to work really well, since they would of been foreign to the Spartans  so making them foreign and crazy looking in the movie really worked.  Soundtrak was awesome too!  Most definitely added greatly to the mood in my opinion.

I don’t blame the dog.

If you like to go to movies where you leave with only the highest respect for everyone involved, and during quiet times every person in the packed theatre is on the edge of their seats dead silent anxiously awaiting the next line; I have the movie you must see.  This weekend I went to see one of the greatest stories of stories to hit theatres in some time.  When I say stories of stories I don’t mean to sound like a movie announcer saying this will be “the movie of all movies” or “an epic adventure to dwarf all other adventures” no, I truly mean that this is a story of stories.  Most definitely the best way that this particular event in history could ever be shown.  When thinking about WWII some of the biggest thoughts that come to mind are atrocities, and heroism.  It’s peculiar how those to go hand in hand, but when you think about it, how can we have any heroes without others atrocity?  In order to save a life it must first be in danger.

The Japanese believed that when we landed on their homeland we would rule them as the British had during their colonization days.  It was because of this that even after being defeated they still dug in, and they still fought to the last man, the last round, often even ending their own life in avoidance of an uncertain future.  What makes a hero?   I’ll never forget the words of Clarion who first put into perspective for me four years ago what it was to be a patriot.  “You know, in the end treason is a matter of dates, I shall be the patriot and you the traitor when the Emperor returns.”  I’m sure that most of you automatically assume that the heroes of WWII would be the American Rangers who willingly put themselves in danger to save people from countries that they had never seen before.  Letters From Iwo Jima puts a different spin on things, not saying that the efforts of American soldiers who fought and died to save a world in turmoil were fruitless, but there is always another side to battle.  One of the more prominent characters in Letters From Iwo Jima said at one point in time “I always believed that the American soldiers were savages, cold, without care for others, I believed these things because I was taught to, but hearing the words of that soldiers mother they’re just like my mothers words.  Maybe we’ve been fighting for the wrong reasons, maybe everything we’ve been told is a lie.  What if they’re just fighting to defend their families as well.”  This was said by one of the Japanese soldiers after their captain read a letter from an American soldiers mother the soldier had been wounded and cared for, though, ended up dying.   Letters From Iwo Jima is actually a compilation of stories from letters found on the island of Iwo Jima many years after the fact, stories written by the Japanese soldiers who bravely fought to defend their families.  The “main” story is of one of the 1,000 surviving Japanese soldiers who was sent off to war as a duty to his country, not meeting his daughter until she was a year old and the war was over.  Of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers defending the small island only 1,000 survived, if only it could be communicated another way that we were not there to conquer.

Have you ever fought for the wrong reasons?  Even unknowingly so, when you came to the realization that your fight was fruitless, or you were hindering the success of those that fought for freedom did you let stuborness get in the way?  Have you ever been your own worst enemy?  What would you feel like if you knew that the one you saw as a threat was actually trying to set you free?

Originally this was simply supposed to be a post about the new movie Letters From Iwo Jima, but I can’t help but pull amazing life lessons from the situation.  My main reason for writing this post in fact was to tell the story of one of the soldiers, and his struggles.  That is where the title comes from, I’ve gone on long enough so I won’t tell the story, you’ll have to watch the movie for yourself.  I will say to you though, that the underlying theme of the entire movie, most impacting of myself this particular story is the idea of “Doing what is right, because it is right.”  Remember that even under extreme circumstances, in extreme ways, with pressure from all sides you still have the choice to do what is right among atrocities.

If it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium

Friday, November 10th, 2006

One of my mom’s patients gave her a movie to watch a while ago… unfortunately our dvd player is rather retarded and couldn’t read the codec (actually somewhat common with our DVD player being that we rent movies all the time and can’t use them).  Well recently I moved the DVD player out of my room down here to the basement.  Several movies that weren’t working before now work… so I figured that I would take a chance with the movie and see where it lead.

At first I must say that I was somewhat disappointed.  Being the title as it was Cody over here was expecting a war time movie.  It only made sense!  With the movie being a burned DVD well there was no clue from the cover of the disk or anything like that.  Here I am expecting Death, Destruction, and Mayhem I wind up watching a movie about 18 tourists who are crammed onto a bus visiting 9 countries in 2 1/2 weeks.  Although the movie was funny, that was not the central focus of it all.  The main theme being the relationship between the Tour Guide, Charlie (played by Ian McShane) and the young and beautiful tourist on this particular trip, Samantha (played by Suzanne Pleshette).  The tale is intriguing, yet it shows distinctly the open and “free spirited” nature of the 60’s.  Much goes on between the many characters of the trip but the main plot line is of Charlie falling in love with Samantha whom by the end of the trip he is proposing to.  For the first few days Samantha is more of a hindrance to Charlie spoiling several attempts to live it up with some of his lady friends scattered across Europe.  Later he falls in love with Samantha and as she is getting ready to board her plane he asks her one last time to stay and marry him.  I don’t know if it was the free spirited nature of the movie, or that I didn’t really get much chemistry from the two, but the answer would of been rather easy for me.  Charlie earlier on reveals a grand plan of his to one day open a newspaper company that prints papers only for tourists giving them information on sights to see, places to go, bargains to find, and the like.  When Samantha asks why he would never do it he says that it’s because he’s not ready to take on responsibility… at which point I would expect her to say SOMETHING about his reply, but she seems fine with it… I don’t know why but it bugs me that she didn’t question such a dodgy attempted at lack of commitment.

Now normally I don’t go in depth about story lines and everything, but if any of you were truly planning on seeing this movie I don’t believe that I have spoiled much of anything.  The story line is rather predictable anyways.  Not to mention you would be hard pressed to find a copy of this 1969 movie.  Even though there was a seeming lack of chemistry, somewhat predictable, and a complete lack for all things moral I still found the movie worth watching.  Being the time period the movie came from they were weary about letting any of the scenes get past kissing, which is better than it would of been nowadays… so it was fairly good, tolerable at worst.
